Labiaplasty New York City
Introduction to Labiaplasty
At our practice in NYC, labiaplasty is becoming an increasingly more popular procedure. For many women, the labia is a sensitive subject to talk about and when problems arise, they’re often left ignored due to the unease surrounding the topic. But that does not change the fact that there are glaring cosmetic issues involving the labia that might arise in a woman’s life. If you have an enlarged labia that has caused you to feel self-conscious in your body or has even limited various aspects of your life, it may be time to consider undergoing labiaplasty.
What is Labiaplasty?
An enlarged labia can be the result of sexual activity, childbirth, the aging process, and even something as simple as genetics. It’s not only an embarrassing cosmetic issue, it can also make practicing good hygiene difficult, restrict certain styles of clothing that may be too uncomfortable to wear, cause discomfort while exercising, and even adversely affect a woman’s sex life. The labiaplasty is designed to help address these concerns by targeting the labia minora and labia majora.
During the procedure, NYC plastic surgeon Dr. William Lao will perform a surgical alteration of the appearance of the folds of skin around the vulva.
Who are the Best Candidates for Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is an excellent solution for women who desire an alteration in the size of their labia. If you are not happy with the appearance of your labia or the length has caused a number of functional issues to arise in your daily life, then a labiaplasty is an excellent solution for you. Ideal patients should be in good physical health and have realistic expectations. Dr. Lao will perform an examination and ask you about your medical history during your consultation to ascertain your candidacy for the surgery.
Labiaplasty Techniques
Labiaplasty can mean the removal, shortening, or reshaping of either the labia majora, labia minora, or both. There are six types of traditional methods used to perform the procedure. They include:
-
Edge resection technique.
-
Central wedge resection technique.
-
De-epithelialization technique.
-
Labiaplasty with clitoral unhooding.
-
Laser labiaplasty technique.
-
Labiaplasty by de-epithelialization.
Dr. Lao will closely assess the treatment area to determine the best surgical technique to address your specific needs and cosmetic goals.
How Should I prepare for Labiaplasty?
Dr. Lao will provide you with a few pre-surgical instructions that you should adhere to before undergoing labiaplasty. These instructions include avoiding alcohol, smoking, and certain medications for a couple of weeks before the procedure and after. After the treatment, you will also have to refrain from sex and strenuous workouts for a few weeks after the surgery. Dr. Lao will explain the instructions in more detail during your appointment.
What are the Benefits of a Labiaplasty?
In some women, the labia may become disproportional with the skin of the inner labia extending beyond the outer labia or the skin of the outer labia extending longer than the inner labia. While what’s considered normal varies from person to person, a labiaplasty is often pursued by women who feel theirs is too long and desire a reduction.
What to Expect on the Day of Labiaplasty
Depending on the cosmetic surgery you and Dr. Lao have discussed, you may have a different experience than another patient. Both are usually performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on what is decided on during your consultation with Dr. Lao.
Trim Procedure — The original technique and one of the most natural to perform, it’s usually completed within an hour and can be combined with additional cosmetic surgery.
Wedge Procedure — During this procedure, a partial wedge is removed from the thickest part of your labia majora. The submucosa will be left intact by removing only part of the thickness. When performed, it gives your vagina a more natural look in addition to preserving the wrinkled edges.
Labiaplasty Recovery
During your recovery, your genitals will probably be very sensitive and will require proper care. You should try to avoid long showers and pat the wound dry every time after washing. Dr. Lao will prescribe you an antibiotic to reduce pain and inflammation. You should avoid any excessive exercise (running, biking, etc.) to prevent pressure on the wound that will delay your healing process. You should also avoid wearing any tight clothing or undergarments that causes friction against the wound. Sexual intercourse should also be avoided for at least four weeks or until Dr. Lao releases you.
